Jobs in times of turbulence

The financial meltdown has adversely impacted jobs in various sectors leading to retrenchment of people across the globe. However the situation is not bad in India. There are still some sectors and careers which usually remain strong even in times of crisis:
  • Health Care:
  • The health care sector hardly gets affected by bad times, as people need more medical assistance during stress. So for Health Care sector the recession is a blessing in disguise and a boom time for people in healthcare, like doctors, nurses and paramedical staff.

  • Education:
  • Recession or no recession, no parent would ever want their kids to skip studies. No wonder, like Health Care even Education sector hardly gets affected by bad times. With the ongoing literacy level drive initiated by our government, this sector will continue to grow at a good rate.

  • Energy:
  • Similar to the Health Care and Education sector, the Energy sector would remain strong irrespective of reversal in business cycle. Therefore businesses and careers related to alternative fuel sources, oil and gas and other energy sources will most probably continue to flourish in the coming years.

  • Telecom:
  • The impact of the current global economic recession is also likely to be comparatively less on Telecom business due to its inherent strength and emergence of mobile communication as a utility. The low penetration in rural and remote areas in the country will keep the telecom service providers growing.

Before signing off would like to also mention, whatever happens to the people in private sector, the jobs of government staff and officers will always remain secure. So, if you can find a government job, just grab the opportunity. You need’nt think twice or say ‘NO’ to that god sent opportunity, particularly in a country like India.

It’s a sign of the times when jeans disappearance from the wardrobe for office attire and job seekers request interviews on weekends so that their job hunt is under wraps. The over recruitment industry has turned the “candidate’s market’ into a ‘employer’s market’ due to the global financial crisis. This has forced laid back candidates to literally pull up their socks. Not only is that, even those currently employed beginning to see their job in a different light. Based on the our discussion with couple of leading recruitment agency that, people currently employed are now requesting for interviews to be conducted after office hours or over the weekend.

The current recruitment scenario could be defined as ‘cruel’, however the financial crisis has at least brought back a sense of responsibility to the candidates that finding and keeping a job is a serious task. Hopefully the recession is expected to cease by beginning of New Year which would stabilize the recruitment industry. Till then a very useful advice for all those currently employed:

“Focus on your current job and do not look out for a job change till the current situation stabilizes.”
